Non-Profit Incubator (NPI) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization registered in Pudong New District of Shanghai in January 2006. Since then, it has been working to realize its mission of advancing social innovations and cultivating social entrepreneurs in China. NPI aims to provide critical support for newly established NGOs and Social Enterprises. NPI is actively exploring an innovative growing path of NGO supporting organizations during the booming Third Sector development in China.
Global experience shows that during the social transformation period, there is a strong need for innovative, dedicated and pragmatic social entrepreneurs to work together with the government and the private sector, especially in areas where both administrative and commercial measures fail to affect. The government administrative reform, together with the reform in public service system, growing awareness of corporate social responsibilities and thriving volunteer spirits, is pushing philanthropy to the threshold of tremendous development in China. However, experiences in the last three decades reveals that it is far more important to expand and integrate new ideas, organizations, talents and resources than just to upgrade existing ones at the early stage of Third Sector development in China. NPI is working with those who have keen grasps of social problems and demands, innovative solutions and the perseverance and capacity needed to implement these solutions.
NPI started its incubation practice in Shanghai since April 2007. Guided by the principle of “supported by the government, initiated by civil society organization, managed by the professional team, monitored by the public and benefited by grassroots NGOs”, the Incubator of NPI provides crucial resources needed for the development of start-up NGOs and Social Enterprises, including: free office space and facilities, counseling and capacity-building programs, registration consulting and micro-subsidies to support the development of NGOs and Social Enterprises in start-up phase. By far, NPI has received recognition and acknowledgements from many stakeholders, including incubating/incubated NGOs, donors, government agencies, corporations, media and etc. In May 2008 and early 2009, NPI launched its Chengdu and Beijing offices respectively, and plans to further promote the NPO incubator model in the whole country. To better fulfill the mission as a NGO supporting organization, we also actively explores diversified development and service models, and establishes NPI Collaboration Platform which includes a series of ongoing and future projects, such as Venture Philanthropy Fund, fundraising network, NPO institute, delegated administration of community center and NGO information center. A nationwide NGO supporting network will be weaved by the Incubator and other NPO-supporting programs from the collaboration platform.
